I see my blog as a form of commonplace book with extras: namely as Jeff says, you're able to develop a readership and get feedback. Possibly establish friendships with like minded enthusiasts. One thing I think determines how good a blog is: passion. If there is an ulterior motive...like flogging product, this taints things.

Jeff and Ceci: Thanks for this link! While I do hope the blog helps me spread the word about my little Charlemagne book, I'm pretty sure I'd be blogging about books and medievalism and culture even if I weren't an author. It's great mental exercise for writers, and it's a fine way to see if one can sustain a voice and maintain a readership long-term.
